Inventor Dave Lampert with the Sybian® on the Howard Stern Show
The idea for the Sybian® was conceptualized by inventor Dave Lampert during the early 1970s. Lampert spent his youth as a farm boy in Illinois and is also a husband and father. In 1983, Mr. Lampert began to conduct research on sexual devices by travelling the Midwest to seek expert advice from sex therapists, researchers, and engineers, as well as exploring adult bookstores, swingers’ clubs, and retailers. He discovered that his idea for the Sybian® was indeed unique. There was concern that the product would be seen by the public as pornographic, but Lampert found that by speaking more openly on the topic of sex and masturbatory aides, more people became receptive to the idea.
Several different prototypes were produced before a final product was launched. The initial prototype was produced in 1985. It consisted of a wooden frame housed in sheet metal, with a vibrator inserted through an opening. A second prototype was made and was the same general size as today’s Sybian®. It was, however, about 30 pounds heavier. It also had handles for the rider to grasp on to. The initial vibration device was unsuccessful and required some refinement. Over the course of approximately three years, Lampert conducted testing to achieve a final design. He personally supervised all tests and listened carefully to feedback.
Initially, the product was called Master Better or MB. The name was then changed to Sybian®, named after Sybaris, an ancient Greek city in the south of Italy that was renowned for being a hub for luxury.
The initial product launch of the Sybian® was quiet without a lot of marketing or advertising. This was partially due to the fact that sex and adult toys were still considered taboo. It was a Penthouse article telling the first hand experience of writer Jessica West that was responsible for creating buzz around the Sybian®. The device would soon gain a reputation within the adult entertainment industry.
The Sybian® Meets Howard Stern
Sybian® became a household name thanks to the Howard Stern Show. Howard Stern was gifted a Sybian® for his birthday in 2006. Stern would regularly have live demos of the Sybian® on his show. On one such occasion, Lampert was invited as a guest of the show where he guided a porn actress to achieve up to 20 orgasms while riding the Sybian®.
